charlesbank on the esplanade project

Charlesbank on the Esplanade is the Esplanade Association’s (EA) transformative project to revitalize a neglected 2-acre site on Boston’s Esplanade, formerly home to the Lee Pool Complex. This initiative will introduce a 9,000-square-foot, two-story pavilion with indoor and outdoor spaces for recreational, civic, artistic, educational, and cultural activities. Designed for year-round, universally accessible use, the project also includes a framed deck, an operations yard, and site enhancements such as tennis and basketball courts, pathways, open lawns, an at-grade stage, a rain garden, and sustainable stormwater infrastructure.

By reconnecting the public to an underutilized area of the Esplanade, Charlesbank will create a dynamic, welcoming space that enriches the park experience. Built on helical piles for stability and sustainability, it aligns with EA’s commitment to environmental stewardship. Once completed, this revitalized space will enhance the Esplanade’s role as a premier destination for residents and visitors alike.
